College Liberal Arts Tutoring
Get Connected to a Great Liberal Arts Tutor Today
Liberal arts — also referred to as the Humanities at some institutions — covers a broad range of fields and corresponding majors usually allow a lot of flexibility for students to discover and pursue their interests, while also developing basic competencies that allow for students to express themselves, more often than not, in writing.
But of course, writing is often the most difficult part, and it’s not always clear what style to use when. Our tutors can at once provide advice on thinking critically about problems and prompts within disciplines that are encompassed by the Humanities and also offer support during the writing process, whether that be right at the beginning or multiple drafts down the line.

General Liberal Arts Courseload:
Foundational Courses in the Liberal Arts
More often than not, the first class you’ll take when studying the Liberal Arts is an introductory English writing course. Although this is not a strict requirement for the major specifically, it provides a necessary foundation for the ways in which you will communicate about subjects within the Liberal Arts.
— and at times, persuasively — is relevant not only to this degree track but also to your life in general. At the same time, it is likely that you will have to take a survey course of foundational works of culture (e.g., survey class on the Western literary canon, an introductory philosophy course).
It is also fairly commonplace for the Humanities department to designate “core” foundational courses that it expects all students within the major track to take. Although these vary from institution to institution, you can expect to be taking: specialized literature courses; history courses that focus on specific eras, regions, philosophical movements, etc.; courses that focus on specific movements in art (whether visual or musical)... only to name a few!
Special Seminars & Advanced Liberal Arts Courses
Although some universities provide freshman-level seminars, it is more likely that you will delve into more niche topics within the Liberal Arts during your junior and senior years. Once you have taken the broader core classes in Humanities (described above), you can move on to specialize in a particular area of study that interests you most. This typically goes on to culminate in a yearlong senior thesis and/or project.
Especially when working on a senior project, it is important to be able to navigate your university’s library resources and corresponding librarians. Depending on how niche your project topic is, you might even be able to find a professor or librarian that is an expert in your field or has studied a related subject!
